For the 5th episode of Unsupervised Thinking, we take a hard look at the world of neural oscillations. What are they? What do they mean? Why do people study them? Nancy Padilla is our special guest who offers first hand knowledge. Find more at unsupervisedthinkingpodcast.blogspot.com Topics: Brain, Oscillations, Neuroscience

The relation between the energy of oscillation in two coupled circuits and the coefficient of coupling is investigated. The primary aircraft is excited by means of a vibrator worked by an electromagnet, and this circuit excites the two coupled circuits under observation. The arrangement is taken as representing a sender and a receiving circuit with a detector circuit coupled to it. It is the energy relations in the last two which are studied. A Pt-Te thermo-couple or a zincite-chalcopyrite... Topics: radiotelegraphy, oscillations and waves (electric)/ B6210F Telegraphy
This paper refers to experiments carried out daring 1909-1910 between the Fesscnden high-power station at Brant Hock and the U.S. cruisers /b Birmingham/ and /b Salem/. A series of experiments enabled data to be obtained as to the laws governing the radiation and reception of electric waves, and the subject of atmospheric absorption up to a distance of 1000 miles to be studied. At Brant Rock 50 to 60 kw. were employed, the two ships' stations being equipped with 10-kw. 500-~ motor-generators. A... Topics: radiotelegraphy, oscillations and waves (electric)/ B6210F Telegraphy

In this paper, the effects of a newly presented structure of unified power flow controller (UPFC) which is based on two shunt voltage-source converters and a series capacitor, are investigated on the dynamic stability of power system. A power system including the newly presented structure of UPFC is introduced to examine this. The non-linear dynamic model of the system under investigation and its non-linear equations are presented as well. The linear equations are achieved by... This paper presents the use of a scanning laser vibrometer and a signal decomposition method to characterize non-linear dynamics of highly flexible structures. A Polytec PI PSV-200 scanning laser vibrometer is used to measure transverse velocities of points on a structure subjected to a harmonic excitation. Velocity profiles at different times are constructed using the measured velocities, and then each velocity profile is decomposed using the first four linear mode shapes and a least-squares... The author obtains a complete solution of the problem of coupled circuits-direct-coupled circuits as well as those coupled electromagnetically-by a method which avoids the difficulty of getting the roots of a biquadratic equation. Both cases are fully worked out. The paper is altogether mathematical and cannot be abstracted. Topic: oscillations and waves (electric)/ B7500 Medical physics and biomedical engineering
An experimental investigation of the conditions for the production of oscillations by means of an arc placed (1) in air, (2) in hydrogen, (3) in steam, (4) in compressed air. In air the arc was formed (240-volt circuit) with electrodes of solid carbon, cored carbon copper, graphite, and copper as anode with carbon kathode. In all cases oscillations of frequency 100,000 per sec. were obtained, thus confirming Salomonson's results, but only in the case of graphite electrodes were steady... The Wide Field Camera 3 (WFC3) instrument for the Hubble Space Telescope (HST) will replace the current Wide Field and Planetary Camera 2 (WFPC2). By providing higher throughput and sensitivity than WFPC2, and operating from the near-IR to the near-UV, WFC3 will once again bring the performance of HST above that from ground-based observatories. Crucial to the integration of the WFC3 optical bench is a pair of 2-axis cathetometers used to view targets which cannot be seen by other means when the... Lunar resource utilization has focused principally on the extraction of oxygen from the lunar regolith. A number of schemes have been proposed for oxygen extraction from Ilmenite and Anorthite. Serendipitously, these schemes have as their by-products (or more directly as their ''waste products''), materials needed for the fabrication of thin film silicon solar cells. Thus lunar surface possesses both the elemental components needed for the fabrication of silicon solar cells and a vacuum...
